It’s a robbery which can only be described as brazen and a Saint John jeweler is going public to protect others.
The incident took place October 7 when a man and woman entered W. Smith and Co. Fine Jewellers in Brunswick Square and asked to look at loose diamonds. When staff was distracted, they made their move and walked out with a diamond worth $10,000.
“They were obviously pro,” owner Wayne Smith said.
The stolen jewelry was replaced with a fake and the theft was caught on video. Smith shared the video because he wants to prevent this from happening to anyone else.
“Most jewelers won’t even go public for some reason and I want to expose these people for who they are.”
It appears the publicity may be helping.
“We have received various tips from the general public and we’ve been able to identify two people of interest that we would like to speak to regarding this,” said Sgt. Chuck Breen of the Saint John Police Force.
Police say they have been in contact with other police organizations in connection with this specific case and they do admit it has been helpful in this investigation.
The high-quality video surveillance equipment used is a key component.
Smith is offering a reward to the person who leads them to the diamond’s safe return.
