A car fleeing police struck and killed a construction worker in Toronto’s east end Wednesday, the province’s police watchdog said.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said a Toronto police officer tried to stop a white BMW near Midland Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East around 11:30 a.m.
A short time later the car struck and killed a man working near Midland Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East.
The man’s identity hasn’t been released, but an SIU spokesman said he lived near Alliston, Ont.
The crew was in the area doing construction work connected with Metrolinx’s Eglinton Crosstown project.
“This is a tragic accident and our thoughts are with the worker’s family and his colleagues,” Metrolinx spokeswoman Anne Marie Aikins said in a statement to Global News.
Toronto police said an officer who was at the scene suffered minor injuries.
A dented white BMW was later found on a side street near Midland Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East.
