WATCH: Calgary police are investigating a deadly hit and run on 16 Avenue N.W. – Oct 6, 2016

Calgary police are searching for the driver responsible for a fatal hit and run near Canada Olympic Park on Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to westbound 16 Avenue N.W. and Stoney Trail N.W. at around 2:30 a.m. by an off-duty Calgary police officer who discovered a man’s body on the road.

“He was able to flag down an EMS vehicle that was travelling westbound as well,” Acting Sergeant Larry Thibodeau said.

The victim, a 44-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, witnesses reported seeing two pedestrians, a man and a woman, walking westbound along 16 Avenue N.W. from Bowfort Road N.W., near the ramp for Stoney Trail N.W., shortly before the body was found.

Investigators believe the man was knocked to the ground and run over by a vehicle.

“It’s not a normal spot to be walking on the highway—that’s for sure—in between the lanes.”

Police believe the woman was farther west along 16 Avenue, unaware the crash happened. Thibodeau suggested the vehicle is a larger, commercial vehicle.

“We are looking for damage particular to the front end or underneath of a vehicle right now,” Thibodeau said. “We didn’t see any vehicle pieces at the scene, so the damage is going to be relatively minor.”

Anyone who was in the area at the time or may have information about the collision is asked to call the Calgary Police Service traffic section at 403-567-4000 or contact Crime Stoppers.

The incident caused the temporary closure of a portion of 16 Avenue N.W.
