Alberta’s fractious all-party ethics committee wraps up with report

EDMONTON – Alberta’s fractious all-party committee on improving ethics in government has officially wrapped up its work.

The committee filed its report Wednesday on the last day of its one-year mandate.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The committee recommended changes to whistleblower protection rules, including stronger provisions to protect the confidentiality of those who come forward.

The panel was also tasked with reviewing the Election Act, election financing and conflict-of-interest laws.

That work didn’t get done because the committee got bogged down in partisan bickering over reforms to election fundraising and spending rules.

The panel has asked the legislature to extend its mandate to allow it to complete its work.
