HALIFAX – Police have laid charges in the July murder of 23-year-old Narico Danefue Downey.

Halifax RCMP say 21-year-old Stephan Johnson, of North Preston, is facing a second-degree murder charge and is set to appear in Halifax Provincial court Friday afternoon.

Police found Downey suffering from a gunshot wound outside a home at 1188 Downey Road on the evening of July 29.

He died at the QEII Health Science Centre a short time later.

The case was added to the Nova Scotia Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes program two weeks ago and police say tips they received led investigators to a suspect in the case.

Mounties say Johnson turned himself into police Thursday afternoon.

The Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes program only pays out money if the information received leads to an arrest and a conviction.

The amount paid out is based on the investigative value of the information, but the reward can be as much as $150,000.

Earlier this year, information provided to the program led to the arrests of bothers Dustan and Joshua Preeper, for the first-degree murder of Melissa Dawn Peacock.

It was the first time tips made to the program led to suspects being brought to trial.
