Kelowna’s top cop quits force

Supt. Nick Romanchuk hasn't been at work since September 6th.

Global Okanagan has learned that Kelowna’s top cop is stepping down. Sources say that a memo was sent to all members in the Kelowna detachment this afternoon indicating that Superintendent Nick Romanchuk has quit the force.

Earlier this month, Global Okanagan was first to report that Romanchuk had been on leave since September 6 and that it wasn’t clear when he would be back on the job.

Today’s memo released to Global Okanagan confirms that Romanchuk has chosen to retire from the RCMP effective immediately after more than 25 years of service. It goes on to say that the search for a new detachment commander is now underway, but no timeline was given on when Romanchuk’s replacement will be announced.

The memo goes on to say that Inspector Brent Mundle will continue to be acting officer in charge of the Kelowna detachment until further notice.

Romanchuk became the city’s top cop in 2013 after being promoted and transferring from the Kootenays where he was in charge of the regional detachment.
