Charges were stayed Thursday against a Beaumont, Alta. teenager who was arrested on serious terror-related charges last year.
In March 2015, the 17-year-old was arrested by the RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team and charged under the Terrorism Act. He was accused of trying to flee the country to participate in a terrorist activity.
His identity can’t be revealed due to his age.

He was also facing charges of:
- Attempting to leave Canada to participate in activity of a terrorist group
- Attempting to leave Canada to commit offence that is terrorist activity
Court documents said the alleged offences involve the Islamic State (ISIS) and are to have taken place on or about March 8 in or near Beaumont, Edmonton, Calgary “and elsewhere.”
In April 2015, provincial court Judge Steven Andrew granted a 30-day psychiatric assessment for the teen.
In May 2015, the teenager was denied bail.

The court can subsequently lift the stay and resume proceedings within one year, but that is a rare occurrence.
