Edmonton police charge man with first-degree murder in connection with deadly 2015 fire

A 23-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder along with arson with disregard for human life in connection with a deadly fire in the Edmonton community of Queen Mary Park last year.

Police said Dakota Kashtin Cappo was charged Tuesday and is now in custody at the Edmonton Remand Centre on “unrelated matters.”

Emergency crews were called to a fire at an apartment building in the area of 115 Street and 107 Avenue at 7:40 a.m. on Nov. 29, 2015. The fire engulfed sections of the third and fourth floors and resulted in two people being sent to hospital.

On Dec. 4, 2015, 54-year-old Gregory Alan Fenton died in hospital. Police said an autopsy showed he died of injuries he sustained in the blaze. A few days later, police revealed they believed Fenton was the victim of a homicide.
