Nanaimo RCMP find grenade during search of ‘drug house’

Nanaimo Police say they found a grenade while searching a known drug house on Thursday.

While the RCMP Explosive Device Unit (EDU) determined the grenade was inoperable and posed no threat to safety, they are continuing to search the home where the device was found, located in the 400 block of Machleary Street.

Four adults were arrested but only a 56-year-old man remains in custody with a bail hearing held Thursday evening for expected drug-related charges.

“Officer safety is paramount when these devices are found,” said Cst. Gary O’Brien of Nanaimo RCMP.

“Calling EDU and shutting down the search was the appropriate response to ensure not the safety of the officers but that of the public.”

The home is a rental property where several ounces of cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine were found and seized in the initial search.
