An Oklahoma mother has been charged for allegedly killing her daughter with a crucifix because she thought she was possessed by the devil.

Police have charged Juanita Gomez with first-degree murder after her daughter, Geneva Gomez, 33, was found lying in her mother’s home with a crucifix on her chest.

The incident happened on Aug. 27.

According to NBC affiliate KFOR News, Gomez had “forced a crucifix and religious medallion down [Geneva’s] throat until blood came out of her daughter’s mouth.”

Geneva’s body was also found placed in the shape of a cross on the floor.

Court documents also showed Gomez said she watched as her daughter died.

It’s believed Geneva was visiting her mother, who neighbours said kept to herself.

“She was a very quiet person. She didn’t really talk to other people. She was just in her own little world,” a neighbour, who wanted to remain anonymous, told KFOR.

This was not the first time Gomez had a run in with the law. In 2003 she was arrested on drug and weapons charges but most of her case was dismissed.

Gomez has been held without bond and is expected to appear in court on Aug. 30.
