Did Vancouver just have its unofficial last day of summer? Forecast says maybe so

We hope you’re happy with your suntan, because Friday may have just been the last day of summer weather in Vancouver.

While the season doesn’t officially end until mid-September, weather forecasts for the region show Vancouverites may have just experienced the last hot day of the summer holidays.

Temperatures peaked at 26 C at Vancouver International Airport Friday, ending a period of warm weather the area has been reveling in for much of August. Highs have reached over 21 C for 20 of the last 26 days, but that is about to end.

“The forecast for the next three to four days is not looking good, it looks more fall-like,” said Global News meteorologist Kristi Gordon.

Temperatures will cool over the weekend into the teens by Tuesday, with a chance of rain beginning Sunday night and into Monday. The clouds and showers are expected to continue throughout the week.

Gordon says this summer has seen frequent cold upper-level lows that have moved across the province time and time again, especially during July.

“We had a nice little break with a ridge of high pressure for about the last week and a half, but now we’re back to this cold upper-level low.”

For the first time in a long time, Gordon says the system will be coming in from the west, which could lead to some rainy weather ahead.

“We haven’t actually seen a real rain-maker over the south coast for a long time, despite the fact that it’s been cool and unsettled, we really haven’t had a significant amount of rain.”

Vancouver received 32.8 mm of rain in July, just under the norm of 35.6 mm. August was much drier at only 7.2 mm, far less than the average of 36.7 mm.

The timing of the latest cold front means families with kids going back to school in September may have just experienced their last chance at real summer holiday weather.

Like many families hoping to get outdoors during the Labour Day long weekend, Gordon is watching optimistically for decent camping weather for the first weekend of September.

But even with some showers and cooler temperatures, there’s no indication Vancouver will be in for the kind of end-of-summer storm the area saw in 2015.

After a severely dry summer, a damaging storm whipped into town from Aug. 29 to 31 with wind gusts up to 80 km/hr and rain totaling 47.8 mm over three days.

While temperatures typically cool in September down to an average of 18 C, Gordon says the long range forecast predicts next month will be nice.
