WINNIPEG — Traditional forms of Indigenous dances from around Manitoba were front and centre at The Forks Saturday afternoon.
A group called Founding Nations of Manitoba Tribal Village performs the dances while dressed in ceremonial garments.
“All these stories that go along with the dances will slowly start telling these people, so before they realize it, they’re absorbing this information and they’re taking it home with them,” said the group’s executive director Sherry Starr.
They perform at The Forks regularly in an effort to showcase Indigenous culture.
“There are some people who are newly arrived to the country, don’t know anything about Aboriginal culture, so this is the first way that we can introduce them and say hi, make them feel welcome and included,” said Starr.
On Saturday, the dance styles of Cree and Ojibway people was featured.
