A man died Tuesday after being buried alive when the side of a hole they were digging collapsed in a rural area northwest of Edmonton on Tuesday. It happened on Range Road 14 south of Highway 651.

Police said four men had been excavating a hole to gather clay. The crew was standing on the edge of the hole when the bank gave way. One man was buried, so the other three went in to rescue their companion.

While they were in there, a second cave-in happened and two men were partially buried. They managed to get out, but the first man remained missing.

Police, firefighters and EMS from Barrhead, along with RCMP from Westlock, responded to the emergency. Both communities are about 35 to 40 kilometres away from where the incident happened.

Rescue crews worked for several hours to find the buried man, who was declared dead at the scene.  The 65-year-old man was from the hamlet of Calahoo, located about 30 kilometres south of where the incident happened.
