IHIT investigating possible homicide inside Surrey jail

One man has died following an altercation at a Surrey jail, and authorities have not ruled out homicide.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit (IHIT) is investigating the death, which happened just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre.

According to authorities, correctional officers intervened when two cell mates, including the 22-year-old alleged assailant, began fighting inside their cell.

The 25-year-old victim sustained extensive injuries and was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

IHIT is consulting with Crown Counsel but have not yet approved homicide related charges.

“IHIT is working with the Integrated Forensic Identification Section, the Surrey RCMP, the Surrey Pretrial Services Centre, and the BC Coroner’s Service to help piece together the factors that led up to the altercation, and subsequent death of the male victim,” says Corporal Meghan Foster.

Police say the males did not know each other prior to incarceration and were awaiting court appearances on separate offences.

IHIT says the victim’s name will not  be released “due to the isolation of the event within the Surrey Pretrial Centre.”

The death comes just days after UBC sex assault suspect David Singh Tucker was found unresponsive in his cell and just over eight months after one man died and another was sent to hospital after a “medical emergency” at the same corrections centre.
