Busy long weekend in Metro Vancouver
Fri, Jul 29: It was a busy day at the ferry terminals and on the roads as thousands were on the move across the south coast. As Julia Foy reports, it comes as Vancouver prepares for one of the busiest weekends of the year – Jul 30, 2016

It is considered to be one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, and Friday showed why.

Hundreds waited for hours Friday night to board at Tsawwassen Ferry terminal.

Travelers started lining up as early as 6:30 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday morning to board.

“I used to live on the Island, this is life with BC Ferries, this is just the reality,” said one of the passengers waiting to board a ferry.

Others said the wait was frustrating, hoping they had made a reservation.

But even those with reservations received bad news when heavy traffic prevented them from catching their sailing.

By Friday afternoon, many of the commuters were facing a two, or even three ferry wait.

On the roads heading out of the city traffic was congested for most of the day, and it’s expected to be the same throughout the long weekend.

With thousands of people heading to Merrit for the River Fest music festival, drivers can expect busier than normal conditions..

It’s also going to be busy in downtown Vancouver with the Honda Celebration of Light fireworks finale happening Saturday night.

And on Sunday, tens of thousands of people are expected to line the streets of the West End for Pride Parade.

With big crowds expected around the province, police are advising drivers to be patient and be safe.

But people on social media were quick to share their frustration with long Ferry waits and traffic in Metro Vancouver.
