First Portage and Main farmers market fills the city’s core

WINNIPEG — The Portage and Main farmers market brought hundreds of people through the downtown on Friday.

The market was a part of the Imagine Portage and Main Pop-up Series put on by the Downtown Biz.

“There’s already been a great response to the idea of bringing the market to this famous corner,” Rose Dominguez with the biz said.

The hope is to get people who work downtown to stick around after hours. The number of people choosing to live downtown has been on the rise over the last few years.

“With the new developments, I feel like there’s a lot of people who are not just working downtown 9-5 but really embracing what downtown has to offer,” Dominguez said.

Mayor Brian Bowman’s campaign aimed at revitalizing the downtown.

“Downtown is booming. The growth has been staggering,” Bowman said at a press conference announcing the new off leash dog park downtown.

The vendors were set up at 201 Portage Ave, and in front of the Scotiabank building. Businesses ranged from fresh produce to baked goods and artisan items. The biz has more pop up events planned throughout the summer.
