Lumby Hockeyville NHL game to be played in Vernon

Lumby may be crowned this year’s Kraft Hockeyville but the big NHL game that comes along with the title will won’t be played in the village.

Instead, the preseason tilt between the Edmonton Oilers and LA Kings will be hitting the ice at Kal Tire Place in Vernon, according to that city’s economic development manager, Kevin Poole.

Lumby residents knew from the beginning the NHL game might not be played on home ice as the local arena is arguably too small hold such a large-scale event.

In a Global News interview last April, Lumby’s mayor Kevin Acton said he’d understand if the game wasn’t played in the village and that having the game at a larger venue would allow more people to attend.

Along with winning the Kraft Hockeyville top prize of hosting an NHL game, Lumby also received $100,000 for arena upgrades.

The preseason game is scheduled for October 2.
