An American is about to set a world record in Canadian waters.

Triathlete Adam Ellenstein of Detroit is attempting to swim the entire length of Okanagan Lake in 40 hours. If he completes his goal on time, it would be a world record for the fastest non-stop swim of Okanagan Lake.

“He stays in his zone, very focused. It is basically like a meditation for him,” support crew member, Melanie McLeroy said.

The 105 kilometre continuous swim began Monday in Vernon and went through the night. By Tuesday, the 39-year-old had swam 72 kilometres.

“It was a beautiful night. It was cold. It was dark. The surroundings were beautiful though and he had people surrounding him who care about him and support him,” McLeroy said.

“He just kept on going.”

Ellenstein is propelled by purpose. He wanted to do something to support his aunt who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

“He settled on trying to go for a Guinness world-record swim in honour of his aunt, and he is doing this to raise awareness for people who choose to live well with Parkinson’s disease,” McLeory said.

The swim is a fundraiser for a foundation that supports people with Parkinson’s.

Watching his progress from a support boat, Ellenstein’s aunt has been moved by the challenge her nephew has taken on.

“[It’s] beautiful, highly inspirational. He calls me the inspiration for the swim which is quiet sobering,” Susan Scarlett said.

He’s accompanied by a crew of 20.

Last year, Ellenstein swam across Lake Winnipeg in 13 hours.

Ellenstein has been eating every half hour during his swim. Some of the food that has kept him going includes pop tarts and pancakes.
