UPDATE: Old Malathion could make its way back to Winnipeg air

WINNIPEG — Just hours after The City of Winnipeg told residents they would not be using mosquito-killing malathion to fog the city, a change in plans again.

Friday afternoon, the city applied to get approval to use DeltaGard instead of malathion to fog the city after Health Canada told the city to stop using their current stock of the chemical because it is too old. 13 years old in fact.

The city bought the chemical from Saskatchewan back in 2003. The label on it said it should not be used after a year. Something The City of Winnipeg just noticed this week.

Now, Friday at 8pm the city came back retracting that statement. Explaining Health Canada’s “Pest Management Regulatory Agency has confirmed with the City of Winnipeg that they would not object to the use of Malathion stock which is older than one year provided the laboratory results show the isomalathion content within PRI Malathion ULV falls within acceptable standards.”

City Staff said the testing on the old batch they have is currently underway to check toxicity levels before it can be used again safely.
