Canadian Red Cross to help Long Plain First Nation evacuees

WINNIPEG – As the community of Long Plain First Nation continues to assess the damage from Wednesday’s tornado, the Canadian Red Cross is stepping in to help.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) said they have an agreement with the Red Cross to support Manitoba First Nation evacuees.

The organization is providing water and food to people displaced from the storm, according to INAC.

“It’s going to be a total loss for a lot of people… I think for the most part a lot of people may not have content insurance,” Long Plain First Nation Chief Dennis Meeches said.

The Red Cross will also open a  reception centre in Winnipeg for lodging and other necessities to help people affected by the storm.

“Our preliminary figure is about 47 homes that have been damaged,” Meeches said Thursday.
