A rash of recent thefts at the Boys and Girls Club in Nanaimo have cost the program thousands of dollars and impacted their daily activities for the kids.

According to RCMP, there have been eight reported thefts from the club’s Fifth Street location over the past two months. Most of the theft has involved gas being siphoned and gas lines cut on club vans. In addition to the gas being stolen, the club’s security cameras have been tampered with or taken.

“We have tried locking gas caps, moving vehicles to more visible locations, installing flood lights and security cameras. None have had any measurable impact,” said Linda Janes, area coordinator for the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club.

When gas lines are cut, the vehicles then need a mechanical inspection; which puts it out of commission for several days. In turn, this causes the cancellation of scheduled day trips for the kids.

“It’s very hard on the kids when we have to explain to them their trip to the beach has been cancelled, yet again,” program leader Jenna Erhart said.

Anyone with information regarding these thefts is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
