Body found in Lake Ontario is missing Hamilton, Ont. man Mohammad Maaz Shaikh: police

YOUNGSTOWN, N.Y. — Authorities say a body recovered from Lake Ontario off the western New York shore is that of a Canadian man who fell into the Niagara River while on a family outing last weekend.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office says the body recovered Tuesday morning is that of 25-year-old Mohammad Maaz Shaikh of Hamilton.

Deputies say Shaikh fell into the river while hiking in the Niagara Gorge during a family gathering last Saturday at the Niagara Glen Nature Preserve in Ontario.

Police say he left the marked trails, climbed onto a rock, fell into the water and was swept away by the current.

A search was launched but was called off after several hours.

His body was spotted by a fisherman near where the river meets the lake.
