New, modern buses will soon be rolling into Kelowna. Premier Christry Clark and Kelowna-Lake Country MP Stephen Fuhr announced the public transit improvement project on Tuesday.
The new buses will include closed-circuit TV to increase safety of passengers and drivers, real-time tracking information and automatic passenger counters.
“Moving our transit service into the 21st century will provide a whole new level of convenience for Kelowna residents.” Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran said in a press release. “The added level of security the city has been advocating for that comes with the addition of safety cameras on buses will give passengers and drivers the peace of mind they deserve when taking transit.”
In addition to the new buses, the transit exchange at UBC’s Okanagan’s campus is getting upgrades to address over-crowding issues.
About $5.1 million in renovations is scheduled to start this September and it’s anticipated to be complete by March 2018.
In total, 11 projects are receiving almost $160 million in combined federal and provincial funding from the new Public Transit Infrastructure Fund.
