Nice attack: how to find information on loved ones

There are now several ways friends and family of those living in Nice, France can check on their well-being following the deadly Bastille Day attack that’s left at least 84 people dead.

Moments after news of the incident began to emerge, Facebook activated its Safety Check feature. The tool allows users living in an affected area to notify their Facebook friends that they’re safe.

Twitter users have also created the group SOS Nice (@urgencesnice) where people have been posting photos of loved ones who were either in Nice at the time of the incident or are now missing.

For Canadian citizens specifically, Global Affairs Canada has issued a statement saying they’re working to identify whether any Canadians have been affected by the attack. In the meantime, officials are urging Canadians who have Canadian relatives or friends in Nice to contact their 24/7 Emergency Watch and Response Centre by calling 613-996-8885 or 1-800-387-3124, or by sending an email to sos@international.gc.ca.

The organization is also asking Canadian citizens in Nice to contact the Embassy of Canada in Paris at +33 (0)1 44 43 29 02.

The attack unfolded Thursday night amid a street party in the southern French city on one of the country’s biggest national holidays. Bastille Day marks the Storming of the Bastille, which happened two days after the French Revolution.
