The crackdown on empty homes could be spreading to another B.C. city after a request from officials in Victoria.
Mayor Lisa Helps says other cities should be given the same opportunity as Vancouver.
She says Victoria is also dealing with its fair share of real estate horror stories and a tax on vacant homes could be one solution.
The legislature is being recalled later this month to make changes to the Vancouver Charter, but those amendments will only affect Vancouver itself.
On Monday, B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong announced the next steps the province is taking to address affordable housing and real estate regulation.
The legislation will provide statutory authority for the City of Vancouver to charge a vacant homes tax.
But the time needed to put the legislation into effect will likely take until 2018, at least a year later than when the City of Vancouver had proposed.
