A complex providing affordable housing for seniors and families officially opened in Kelowna on Wednesday.
Pleasantvale, which is located in the 600 block of Richter Street, features 50 affordable housing units for seniors and 20 affordable town homes for families with low to moderate incomes.
Built in the 1950’s, the original Pleasantvale was a 50-unit seniors development.
B.C. Housing led a public consultation process after which Kelowna City Council approved rezoning of the aging site in 2013.

Since the redevelopment of Pleasantvale, which began last winter, the original 50 units were replaced and 20 new affordable-rental homes for families were built.
Resident Carol Evans said she moved into one a one-bedroom unit at Pleasantvale in January.
“The building is so safe and it’s beautiful to live in because everything is so well finished, easy to keep clean, easy to cook and do the dishes and it’s wonderful,” Evans said.

According to the province, the rent for the one-bedroom units for seniors is $667 per month.
The monthly rent for the family town homes is between $990 for a two-bedroom and $1,100 for a three-bedroom home.
“For over 60 years, Pleasantvale has been a home for seniors, and now it will be that and more. By providing affordable homes and a real community for seniors and families alike, Pleasantvale will change people’s lives,” Kelowna mayor Colin Basran said.
The development is managed by non-profit, Society of Hope.
