An Earls location in Calgary has done away with tipping. Instead, customers will find a 16 per cent “hospitality charge” on their bills.

Earls vice-president of operations, Craig Blize, said the company has done a lot of research around the no-tipping model. He said it’s happening in New York and in other major cities in the U.S.
Some restaurants in Vancouver and Toronto are also experimenting with the new system.
The money from the charge is split between all staff to avoid wage disparity often found in the restaurant industry.
Blize adds that they are testing this model at Earls.67 in Calgary, to see if it “promotes teamwork, promotes engagement – that will hopefully result in a better guest experience.”
