People’s morning fitness routines were disrupted at the Kelowna Family YMCA in Rutland, after an unexpected electrical outage caused an evacuation.

Shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, YMCA staff said there were reports of smoke after the power failure.

People had to flee the building while firefighters and electricians were called to the scene.

“It’s a very busy time at the YMCA in the morning with a lot of people enjoying group fitness classes in the pool. So we did make sure that were able to evacuate the building in a timely and organized fashion,” said C.J. Wilkins, a marketing manager at the facility.

Wilkins said a power surge caused the failure, damaging some electrical components and causing some lightning to shut off.

The pool is closed for the rest of Tuesday but other parts of the facility is operating as usual.
