The presentation was promoted after two Steinbach mothers filed a human rights complaint against the division for excluding sexual orientation and gender diversity identity from classroom discussion.

The society’s president Norm Gould said the absence of important conversations can cause a lot of pain for students and their families, citing the many suicides of bullied LGBTQ students.

“We have asked ourselves: how can we take tragic events and use them as catalysts for change; to prevent similar horrific events from payalyzing our communities?” Gould said.

Gould also said it’s important to encourage students to be who they are in a safe, nurturing, environment.
