Winnipeg’s Victoria Tachinski broke another Canadian youth track record on Saturday.

Tachinski, 16, won the 800 metre race at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, Tennesse. Tachinski beat a field of college athletes and professionals from all over the world in a time of 2:03.58 to smash the Canadian under-18 outdoor record in that distance.

“It was a really good race.” said Tachinski. “I am lucky I was able to compete with all those girls. It was perfect conditions. There was no wind, no rain, no sun. It was just the perfect opportunity to run a great 800.”

The old record of 2:05.99 was held by Winnipeg’s Carly Paracholski set in 2010.

“Honestly, I didn’t even know I had that time in me.” Tachinski said. “Kind of just came in the moment and I didn’t really know what the record was when I was running. My time, when I saw it, I was just so happy I was able to run a big personal best and then later found out about the record.”

The time was under the standard to qualify for the Junior World Championships in Poland this July. The team won’t be officially announced until the end of June, but two athletes would have to beat her time to prevent her from qualifying. Tachinski already owned Canadian youth indoor records in the 300m, 400m and 600m distances.

Tachinski attends Vincent Massey Collegiate and is now the top ranked high school girl in the 800 metre in all of North America. She is also ranked sixth in the 800 metre for all age groups in Canada.

Tachinski flew back to Winnipeg on Sunday and will race next weekend in Brandon at the high school provincial track and field championships. She will then race at New Balance Nationals Outdoor from June 17-19 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
