There are more calls for a province-wide “Silver Alert” system after a missing senior was located this weekend.

Sixty-two-year-old Saloueb Kien, who suffers from dementia, went missing in Surrey last week.

She was found on Saturday after someone saw a posting on BC Silver Alert, an informal, volunteer-run system that aims to get the word out about missing seniors through social media.

Advocates for the elderly have been pushing for a formal, province-wide Silver Alert notification system modelled on the Amber Alert for missing kids.

“The point is, a vulnerable missing person is an emergency and it’s critical to quickly spread the word that someone is missing,” advocate Sam Noh said.

Sam’s father Shin Noh was last seen on Sept. 18, 2013 near his home in Coquitlam when he went on his morning walk.

Despite numerous sightings, his family is still looking for answers. They think a Silver Alert system may have helped in the search for their father, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

“Within five years, 50 per cent more families will be dealing with Alzheimer’s,” he added. ” Six out of 10 [of people with Alzheimer’s] will wander at one point,” Noh said.

“Alzheimer’s and wandering is not going away. The discussion needs to continue. It’s only going to get worse.”
