Christine Girard wins bronze medal in weightlifting at London Olympics

LONDON – Canada’s bronze bonanza continues at the London Olympics.

Weightlifter Christine Girard has captured bronze in the women’s 63-kilogram class.

It’s Canada’s third bronze of the day and fourth of the Games.

Divers Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal kicked things off today with a third-place finish in the 10-metre synchro event.

Antoine Valois-Fortier won a bronze in men’s judo less than 30 minutes later.

Girard, who grew up in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., and lives in White Rock, B.C., completed the hat trick an hour later.

She finished third with a total weight of 236 kilograms.

Maiya Maneza of Kazakhstan won gold while Svetlana Tsarukaeva of Russia captured silver.

Maneza was second after lifting 110 kilograms in the snatch but rose to first place by taking 135 kilograms in her first clean and jerk for a total weight of 245 kilograms, an Olympic record.
