Halifax RCMP are investigating what led to a woman’s death Sunday afternoon at Peggys Cove, N.S.

Emergency officials were called to the area shortly after 1:30 p.m. By the time they arrived, a local fishing vessel had recovered the woman’s body and brought it to a nearby wharf.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

RCMP are not releasing the name or age of the victim at this time, they will only confirm it was an adult female.

Police confirm that the woman was alert when she went into the water.

“We do know from talking to witnesses early on when we arrived that the woman was conscious and communicating with bystanders on the shore prior to the time where she was found unresponsive by a fishing vessel,” said Barrett.

It’s estimated the woman was in the water between 10 to 15 minutes before her body was recovered.

RCMP say their investigation is still in the preliminary stages, more information is expected in the coming days.
