CALGARY – A Calgary woman who admitted to strangling another woman out of fear the victim would tell police about her involvement with drug dealers is taking a first step toward eventual release from prison.

Elizabeth Laverne Roberts pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the February 2004 death of Jennifer Renn and was sentenced to life with no chance of parole for 14 years.

Court heard that Roberts and four men lured the 29-year-old victim to a motel room, where Renn was killed because she had overheard phone conversations between the accused and traffickers.

Renn’s body was tossed into the trunk of a car and was found about two months later.

In a ruling earlier this month, the National Parole Board agreed to allow Roberts to attend a specified group meeting twice a month in the company of a correctional staff member.

Roberts is eligible for unescorted passes and day parole in late 2019 and full parole in 2022.
