KELOWNA — Investigators followed location information from a GPS tracking App of a stolen iPad to recover the tablet and stolen pick-up truck it had been left in.
On April 3, at 6:27 am, Kelowna RCMP received a report of a vehicle stolen over night from the parking lot of a business located in the 1500 block of Harvey Avenue. Police were advised that the vehicles owner had since located his stolen 2015 Chevrolet Silverado in the alley behind the 700 block of Fuller Avenue.
The owner reported to police that he had left his Apple iPad tablet inside the stolen truck, along with a spare key for the vehicle. It was the GPS tracking App, called “Find my phone,” which led the owner and police to the discovery of the stolen vehicle. Following the GPS coordinates investigators isolated a residence they suspected the device to be inside and subsequently identified a suspect in possession of the stolen device.
During a further search of the suspects residence police recovered the outstanding spare key to the stolen truck along with other items allegedly taken from the truck.
The suspect, a 17-year-old Kelowna youth, was arrested. He now faces potential charges of possession of property obtained by crime, theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000, theft under $5,000, and fail to comply with a sentence under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He appeared in Court yesterday.
