Panama Papers: Twitter unleashes its best Icelandic humour after PM resigns

Iceland’s prime minister, Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, resigned Tuesday just one day after he was named in a massive leak of financial documents dubbed “the Panama Papers” that revealed offshore accounts belonging to multiple world leaders.

Thousands of Icelanders had been protesting both outside the parliament building in Reykjavik and online demanding he step down.

Shortly after news of Gunnlaugsson’s resignation broke, Twitter users began using their best Icelandic humour to react to the news, many using the hashtag #cashljós (“Cash out”).

Translation: “All publicity is good publicity.”

Even whistleblower Edward Snowden was in on the jokes.

Some found humour in Iceland’s reputation for being super friendly.

Others played off of Iceland’s incredibly small population (just over 323,000 people, according to the country’s 2013 census).

But many were quick to come up with quips about Skyr yogurt – an Icelandic specialty and one of the many items that Icelander’s began throwing at the parliament building in Reykjavik during the protests.
