WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Liberals are promising to cut the number of children in government care in half if elected.

Candidate Kyra Wilson says the party would spend more money on working with families than on apprehending kids.

She says the Liberals would also give children the option to remain in care until age 25.

Wilson says she doesn’t think this would cost the government more because there would be fewer kids in care.

Wilson is on leave from her job with Manitoba’s First Nations children’s advocate office and is running against the NDP’s child and family services minister.

Manitoba has more than 10,000 kids in care and the vast majority are indigenous.
