EDMONTON – The Alberta government says more high school students are getting their diplomas.
The three-year high school completion rate increased to 74.1 per cent in 2011, up from 72.6 per cent in 2010.
This is the fourth year in a row the rate has gone up.
Alberta Education spokeswoman Kim Capstick says there’s no single reason for the increase, but could include factors such as educators making school more engaging and more flexible.
As well, Alberta’s dropout rate for students aged 14-18 was significantly lower in 2011, down to 3.2 per cent – Capstick says that’s a decline of almost a full percentage point.
Statistics Canada releases its own survey of provincial high school completion rates in the fall, using different criteria, which usually shows Alberta at the bottom of the pack.
