Newfoundland junior hockey coach suspended for one year, team faces fine

MOUNT PEARL, N.L. – A Newfoundland hockey team is facing a fine and their coach has been suspended for a year after they did not attend opening or closing ceremonies at a tournament in April.

The Mount Pearl Junior Blades are facing a $2,000 fine and coach Brian Cranford has been suspended after the team failed to attend the ceremonies at the Don Johnson Cup.

Cranford says the tournament takes place during university final exams and the team was just putting their education before hockey.

He says it was not the team’s intention to be disrespectful.

Cranford says the guidelines of the tournament did not outline suspension as a punishment for disregarding the rules.
