SASKATOON – A group in Manitoba wants their province to be the first in Canada where people would automatically be organ donors, unless they opt out. ‘Presumed consent’ legislation would change the status quo of organ donation after death; instead of needing to sign up to be a donor, everyone would be presumed to have given consent unless they specifically opt out.

In either case, family members would still have the final say.

According to the group pushing for the change, presumed consent legislation has been shown to increase organ and tissue donation rates by 25 to 30 per cent.
