Seasonal temperatures kick off February

WINNIPEG — January is in the books, and mark down yet another month of above normal temperatures.

Sure we had a decent cold spell hitting -30 Celsius overnight twice (January 10, -29.7 C and January 17, -32.3 C).

But overall the month finished a couple of degrees above our average temperature of -16.4 C.

February is off to a seasonal start, but we should still expect the odd cold blast of winter. After all, the official start to spring isn’t until March 20.

February of 2015 wasn’t particularly pleasant.

From February 11 until February 27 we were -20 C or colder every night.

Along with that we had seven nights where we reached -30 C or colder.

February 22 was the coldest night that month with a low of -33.5 C.

The outlook for this year is a lot brighter especially as El Nino continues to help us reach some milder temperatures.

For the rest of this week we are sticking fairly close to daytime highs reaching our seasonal -10 C, give or take a degree or two.

We could still see some light snow or flurries pass through the city over the next few days, but nothing in the way of huge accumulations.
