WINNIPEG – With the Superbowl just days away, many football fans are planning game-viewing parties and need food and drink ideas.

A Toronto-based beverage company, Old Tomorrow, is launching craft beers with food pairing recipes in Manitoba starting Tuesday.

“Beer is really making a push to pair with food like wine did 20 or 30 years ago,” Old Tomorrow co-founder Ian Macdonald said.

“Hops in the beer pairs really well with dark chocolate… the bitterness with the chocolate smooths out the hops and the maltiness gives it a sweet finish to help cleanse out the palette.”

Macdonald suggests trying different brewed beers with sharp cheddars, dill goat and gouda cheese to pull out flavours.

“If you’re going to create a cheese or a meat spread at the Superbowl or at a social consider pairing beers with cheeses,” Macdonald said.

Another treat you may want to give to guests while enjoying the game is a beer float.

Macdonald used a few scoops of ice cream along with Golden Ryed Ale and whipped cream to create this on Global Winnipeg’s Morning News.

“That rye and that oak give it a nice honey caramel note which pairs super well with vanilla… top it off with some fresh graham crackers and some caramel sauce on top,” Macdonald said.

People can also cook food such as bacon with beer to enhance the flavour. More recipes are available here.

“We take Canadian bacon, Canadian maple syrup and Canadian pale ale marinated it all together, cook it… when you’re looking for a show stopper for the Super Bowl.”
