Mall patrons jump into action after robbery attempt in Penticton

The glass has been repaired on this display case at Paris Jewellers in Penticton after an attempted robbery on Friday that saw the case smashed open.

PENITCTON – A brazen attempt at robbery occurred inside Cherry Lane Shopping Centre in Penticton on Friday.

Penticton RCMP say it was around 2 p.m. when a man smashed a glass display case at Paris Jewellers.

Store manager Emily Forbes says before the would-be thief was able to get away with anything, several bystanders jumped into action, holding the man down and calling 9-1-1.

“It was so sudden and as soon as the glass was smashed, there were just so many people here as well, at least 50,” says Forbes.

Police arrested the man and are now recommending charges. RCMP say there were two men involved in the attempted robbery but the other one got away.

“Boxes were destroyed and pieces went flying everywhere. About 10 pieces were returned to us by hand, people just bringing them up and saying ‘here’s another one, here’s another one’. To me, that was just phenomenal,” says Forbes.

The glass on the display case has been repaired and a day later, it’s business as usual at Paris Jewellers. Forbes says it’s all thanks to those who took action to help.

“Just seeing the way the community of our mall and everybody else in it just banded together to take care of that situation was just amazing to me,” says Forbes.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
