Nova Scotia not keen on New Brunswick’s proposed border tolls

Nova Scotia’s premier says New Brunswick could run into difficulties if it decides to move ahead with tolls at its border entry points.

But Stephen McNeil also says the idea is entirely hypothetical and he has not seen any proposal from his counterpart, Brian Gallant.

The New Brunswick government is considering three different toll options as it looks at measures to help chop away at its massive debt in a budget to be tabled on Tuesday.

One would see electronic or manned tolls at Aulac, N.B., just across the border from Nova Scotia, although the New Brunswick government has acknowledged there could be difficulty in securing reciprocal agreements with other jurisdictions if it chooses that option.

McNeil says it’s up to New Brunswick to do what it feels is best for its coffers and his province will do the same.

He points out that Nova Scotia is also looking at the feasibility of tolls as it considers funding the twinning of eight sections of major highways in the province.
