LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles City Council has agreed to pay a total of $24.3 million to two men who each spent decades in prison for murder before they were exonerated.
The council voted Tuesday to pay $16.7 million to Kash Register and $7.6 million to Bruce Lisker.
The men had filed unrelated but similar lawsuits against the city for wrongful convictions, challenging the police work that helped send them to prison.
Register served over 34 years for the shooting death of a 78-year-old man in west Los Angeles in 1979. In 2013, a judge overturned his conviction, saying police ignored the sisters of one eyewitness who said the woman was lying.
Lisker spent 26 years in prison for the stabbing death of his 66-year-old mother when he was 17. He was released in 2009.
