Tina the cat is on the mend and getting healthier by the day, the Hometown Veterinary Hospital reports.

Tina was brought to Hometown Veterinary Hospital in October after being taken into custody by the Fredericton SPCA.

She was morbidly obese, weighing 38 lbs. She was so large she couldn’t clean herself, and she was full of infections.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

She was put on a strict diet and exercise plan, which as the vets report, has been very effective.

“She is now down to about 33 and a half [lbs] which doesn’t seem like a significant amount of weight, but for a cat it is. If we put that into human terms or human equivalent, I guess she’s lost about 75 pounds,” said veterinarian Chelsie Armstrong.

Armstrong said Tina is still on pain medication because her size makes it painful to walk or exercise.

“Obesity threatens to cut short an animal’s life and is actually a form of neglect,” FSPCA director Annette James said when Tina was first brought to the hospital.

Tina’s vet maintains that it will still likely take up to two years for Tina to fully recover and to reach a healthy weight for a cat, which is about 16 to 20 lbs.
