Halifax Regional Council rejects chief’s volunteer firefighter plan
WATCH ABOVE: Halifax regional council has rejected the fire chief's plan for fire station staffing. The chief said the city could safely transition a station on Patton Street to volunteers and two others to be staffed by a mix of volunteers and career firefighters, but public opinion against the plan won out over the chief’s report. Marieke Walsh reports – Jan 12, 2016

The motion to change staffing at three Halifax fire stations has been defeated in city council, with members voting six for, 11 against.

A Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency proposal suggested stations on King Street, in Dartmouth, and Lady Hammond Road, on the peninsula be converted to E-platoons, meaning career firefighters would staff the the stations during the day and volunteer firefighters would staff the stations overnight and on weekends.

After the vote, the stations will remain staffed by career firefighters 24/7.

The staff report also proposed converting the station on Patton Road, in Sackville, to a fully volunteer station.

Many residents and some councillors are speaking out against the proposal, including Gloria McCluskey, Joel Plaskett, Francis Fares, and the Downtown Dartmouth Business Commission.
