Donald Trump, Pope Francis tie in U.S. poll for second-most admired man in the world

What do Republican presidential contender Donald Trump and Pope Francis have in common? They share the title as the second-most admired man in the world, according a Gallup poll released Monday.

The Donald and The Pope each earned five per cent  support among American voters. But both finished a distant second to U.S. President Barack Obama who was named the most admired man with 17 per cent of the vote, the poll found.

This was the eighth year in a row Obama has appeared at the top of the list.

“Trump’s surprisingly strong and often controversial presidential campaign has made him a prominent news figure this year and, thus, top-of-mind for many Americans,” Jeffrey M. Jones, of Gallup, wrote.

“This helps explain his strong showing when Gallup asks Americans, in an open-ended fashion, to name the man they admire most. The successful businessman has finished in the top 10 four other times, including from 1988 through 1990 and in 2011.”

Bernie Sanders was next with three per cent and Bill Gates with two per cent. Tied for seventh place were the Dalai Lama and George W. Bush.

Hillary Clinton named the most admired woman for the 20th time

Democratic presidential favourite Hillary Clinton led the voting for most admired woman in the world earning 13 per cent support, according to the poll.

She beat out Malala Yousafzai, the 18-year-old Pakistani education activist who was shot by the Taliban, who came in second with five per cent. Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama were next in the poll both with four per cent.

Republican presidential contender Carly Fiorina, Queen Elizabeth II, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Myanmar civil rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, rounded out the top 10 women.

Gallup, known for its public opinion polls, has been asking American the question of who they admire most worldwide since 1948. Hillary Clinton has been the top choice female choice 20 times more than any other woman, followed by a former first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, who was named the most admired woman 13 times.

Former president Dwight D. Eisenhower was named the most admired man 12 times, the only man to be named more than eight times.

The 2015 poll was conducted among 824 U.S. residents age 18 and older by phone from Dec. 2 to Dec. 6 and has a margin of error of four percentage points, according to Gallup.
