Backpack full of fentanyl patches stolen from Ontario pharmacy: police

Police have issued a public safety warning after a large quantity of fentanyl patches were stolen at knifepoint from an Ontario area pharmacy on Sunday.

York Regional Police say the incident happened on Dec. 27 around 2:30 p.m. at a pharmacy located at 20865 Dalton Road in Sutton north of Toronto.

It is alleged the male suspect walked behind the counter, pulled out a knife and demanded fentanyl patches.

The accused fled on foot after stuffing a backpack with the patches.

The suspect is described as white, in his 30s, 5’7″ tall and with a thin build.

He was wearing a black winter jacket with fur around the hood, blue aviator sunglasses and grey gloves.

Police say the fentanyl is extremely potent and a fatal overdose can occur.

Authorities are reminding the public the opioid-based pain killer is roughly 100 times stronger than morphine and numerous deaths from fentanyl overdoses have occurred across North America.
