Special Star Wars screening for North Shore Rescue member battling cancer

There was a special screening in North Vancouver Sunday morning of the most popular film in the world, but the hundreds of movie goers weren’t just eager to see the new Star Wars film.

It was also an emotional show of support for Jay Piggot, a member of the North Shore Rescue team who’s in the fight of his life.

“It truly is an epic, epic feeling all the time when these type of events that the team arranges and I get to meet members of the public and meet people that just want to support me and my family,” said Piggot.

A few weeks ago, the 34-year-old part-time paramedic was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of cancer affecting his liver. With months of chemotherapy ahead of him, his fellow volunteers at North Shore Rescue launched a campaign called ‘Rescue the Rescuer.’ The goal was raise enough money so Piggot and his family would be taken care of while he’s undergoing treatment.

They’d hoped to raise $60,000. Instead, they received more than $100,000 – an amount rivaled only by the steady stream of support.

“There’s days that I get down and the stories, the support from people and strangers it is truly unbelievable,” said Piggot.

More than 300 people came out on Sunday to join Piggot at the North Vancouver screening – some of them friends, others, complete strangers – but all of them know his story about his battle with cancer.

“He’s such a good guy everyone just wants to show him support. So, we’re here to enjoy his favourite movie and hang out with him and have a good time and boost his spirits so he knows he’s not alone in this fight,” said Miles Randell, a fellow North Shore Rescue volunteer.
